“You are among the nicest people I have ever known, both staff and volunteers. You will never be forgotten for the thoughtfulness you have shown”

“You are all so kind and made me feel like a respected human being again and not just a prisoner’s wife. Believe me that was so comforting and humbling.”

The charity organisation HALOW operate a designated help and support line for the families and friends of prisoners at HMP Birmingham on 0121 598 8050

One of our prisoners has a family of 4 children, two girls and two boys. The oldest boy who is 7 years old suffers from severe Autism. Before we took up our posts as children’s workers his mother told us that he would become quite anxious waiting to be called through for the visit. He would listen for his group to be called and would get anxious waiting. Since April we have focused activities both in the centre and also in the visits hall, to try and alleviate the children’s fears and anxieties. He was shy at first and mother came to the table alongside his siblings to encourage his participation. Over the last few months he has fully engaged in activities, proudly taking his creations to show his dad. He enjoys children’s days, when all the family enjoy quality time together. He gives us hugs when he arrives and asks “what are we making today?” he has also designed us a Christmas card which we have reproduced to sell for charity and when he saw they were for sale last week he was thrilled and told his sister that they are famous. He and his family are a pleasure to work with. His father appreciates the work that we do with his children and has spoken of remaining here during the rest of his sentence as our family intervention is so effective. He also told us last week when he is released he would like to work with prisoners and their families as he realises how important these interventions are.
