HALOW (Birmingham) is a rather unique charity. Its charitable aims are to relieve poverty, sickness and distress, and to advance public education and awareness of issues affecting prisoners’ families. The service it provides is to initially provide help and support regarding the visiting process and to give them the opportunity to receive advice and information on a wide range of issues. The work that HALOW (Birmingham) undertakes is aimed at maintaining good family ties which in turn should help prevent reoffending. HALOW (Birmingham) is a well-established, medium sized charity with a clear focus and a long-serving team of paid staff and volunteers. Income last year was close to £400k, most of it coming from the Prison Service, with additional support from private donors, charitable trusts and revenue from some of its tea bars.
