To provide structured and semi-structured activities for children and young people, as well as offering a nurturing environment and all round support to children and families.
To support the design and development of a volunteers training programme.
To assist with undertaking all the tasks necessary for the day-to-day running of the Centre and to contribute to the development of the Centre.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILIITES
a) Run structured, stimulating and engaging activities for children and young people, focusing on providing positive outcomes and enjoyment which raise aspirations and lessen the stress of visiting. This is both at the centre before each visit and in the main prison during visit sessions.
b) Provide activities in the main visits hall for each session you are on duty that are age and ability related.
c) Clean all toys/equipment that have been used at the end of each session, and all other toys on a rota basis which should be documented.
d) Keep accurate daily records of attendees/ activities.
e) Keep an up to date inventory of all toys & equipment both in the centre and stored at the prison
f) Create a pleasant and welcoming environment for children and young people attending the Centre.
g) Provide a ‘listening ear’ to prisoners’ families and friends and displaying empathy.
h) Ascertain the needs of children through engagement with the parents and observation of the children.
i) Offer support and advice to parents/ carers on children’s needs and problems.
j) Liaise with the centre staff to ensure parents/ carers receive information and advice if needed, on sources of support to help with any problems children may be experiencing.
k) Maintain the play area within the Centre.
l) Help to lead Family Days/ Visits.
m) Help with the maintenance of equipment and materials and maintain a resource bank of these materials, toys and equipment for various ages.
n) Maintain good working relationships with prison staff at all levels.
o) Assist with the collection of statistical information and maintain appropriate records.
p) Provide reports for funders as requested which will include case studies & photographic evidence.
q) Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions provided.
r) Support volunteers and assist with their training.
s) Assist the Visitors’ Centre Co-Managers in maintaining the security of the Centre and ensuring that proper Fire and Health & Safety regulations are observed.
t) Adhere to all HALOW (Birmingham) and prison policies & procedures which will include: Safeguarding of Children & Adults at Risk, Equal Opportunities and Diversity, Confidentiality, Health & Safety and Security.
u) Participate in staff meetings, training and supervision.
v) Participate in formally agreed disciplinary and grievance procedures.
w) Attend such training as may from time to time be necessary in order to carry out the tasks required.
x) Establish relationships and communicate effectively with other agencies as appropriate.
y) Undertake, from time to time, other reasonable duties appropriate to the post as considered necessary by the Board of Directors.
